Alder Health Services adheres to the Standards of Care for the Health of Transsexual, Transgender, and Gender-Nonconforming People published by The World Professional Association for Transgender Health.

Transgender hormone replacement therapy — male to female or female to male — in Harrisburg, just like almost every other medical treatment, carries with it some benefits and risks. The risks will depend on a variety of factors, including the type of hormone given, your age and overall health as well as your family history of certain conditions. Your doctor will carefully discuss with you all of the benefits and risks before starting you on any type of hormone replacement regimen.

Female to male transgender hormone replacement therapy in Harrisburg increases the level of testosterone while gradually lowering the level estrogen. There are several ways to administer testosterone, including skin patches, gels and injections. Testosterone injections tend to work faster and are the least expensive.

If you are considering transgender hormone replacement therapy male to female in Harrisburg, your doctor will work to increase your estrogen level and reduce your testosterone level. You may be given a hormone known as anti-androgen to lower testosterone to a level that is normal for a woman.

How the Process Works

If you are considering hormone replacement therapy, we encourage you a relationship with an informed behavioral health provider. Prior to your first appointment, we request a letter of support from an informed behavioral health provider. It is important to have a supportive professional in your corner as you begin a new chapter in your life. Here at Alder Health Services, we have masters level therapists that are qualified to help you along your journey.

Your first appointment will allow the provider to get to know you and review the risks and benefits of starting HRT. Prior to your first appointment, it is important that you request your previous health records to assist the provider and you in mapping out an appropriate treatment plan. After an initial plan is in place, lab work to check kidney functioning, and other basic labs are done prior to starting HRT. Once the provider has reviewed the lab work, you will begin your HRT regimen.

Alder Health Services encourages individuals using injectable medications to come into the office for their first injection where a nurse or medical assistant will train you on how correctly and safely administer your medication.
