Prevention Specialist

Summary: The Prevention Specialist will advance the mission and vision of Alder Health Services by providing community outreach and testing services, promoting safe sex practices, and helping individuals and families access our food pantry and clothing bank.  The Prevention Specialist recognizes the unique and diverse population of individuals that Alder Health Services supports.

 

Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

·         Becomes a certified HIV/STI testing counselor.

·         Participates in our free HIV/STI testing clinic and testing events.

·         Prepares and facilitates testing and process sample. Documents and reports results.

·         Utilizes the AFTIS laboratory system for biomedical sample processing and reporting.

·         Processes biomedical samples while maintaining strict adherence to safe laboratory practices.

·         Provides HIV/STI results to clients no greater than 1 week following testing.

·         Participates in mandatory and voluntary professional development training.

·         Remains current on HIV treatment issues and community resources/agencies for referrals.

·         Remains current on PrEP use and developing preventative measures to prevent HIV and sexually transmitted infections.

·         Participates in activities outside of the office for promotions, testing, and community outreach.

·         Works with creative services manager to maintain social media accounts and create new posts.

·         Maintains a positive and professional work relationship with community partners and Alder Health Services staff.

·         Ensures the highest level of confidentiality for all clients, client physical and digital records, and client related issues.

·         Responsible for operation of the food bank and clothing closet, including organizing available items, documentation and reporting, and directly assisting clients accessing these services.

·         Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Language Ability:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Math Ability:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and government-based web programs for tracking data, training will be provided.

 

Education/Experience:

High School diploma or GED equivalency; and one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates and Licenses:

Valid Driver's License

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Other Abilities:

·   High level of comfort working with diverse populations, specifically the LGBTQ+ community and individuals living with HIV/AIDS

·   Time management

·   Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred

·   Must possess reliable, personal transportation

·   This position works throughout the community and occasionally requires a vehicle to complete the assigned job duties
